The project ‘5 – The dish’ was a series of events and workshops with a focus on the consumption and production of food. As an experimental exploration of design research and practice and my MA project at Helsinki’s Aalto School of Arts, it intended to find new roles and applications for design: for designers, non-designers and “citizen designers”. By drawing analogies to past and current movements in the design and art field, the project’s aim was to inspire thought amongst creative professionals, students, and citizen about the way we live, work, produce and consume – are there alternative ways of …?

The research concluded that new roles for design are numerous and unlimited: from facilitator to enabler, catalyst, communicator, networker, social worker, maker, social entrepreneur and many more. Design has the potential to overcome its disciplinary limits by freeing itself from business imperatives and shifting its focus on people and meaningful experiences.
